Vietnam Airlines Confirms Order for 50 Boeing 737 MAX Jets to Support Regional Growth

Vietnam Airlines has finalized an order for 50 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, marking the carrier’s first Boeing single-aisle purchase and reinforcing its fleet renewal and growth strategy. The announcement was made at an event in Washington, D.C., with Vietnamese and U.S. officials in attendance alongside Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Stephanie Pope and Vietnam Airlines Chairman Dang Ngoc Hoa.

The order centers on the 737-8, a model Boeing positions as a flexible platform for high-frequency domestic and regional flying—an area where Vietnam Airlines expects demand to continue rising across Southeast Asia.

A single-aisle expansion plan aligned with demand

Vietnam Airlines is adding the 737-8 to support growth on short- and medium-haul routes while increasing capacity and reliability. Industry projections cited in the announcement indicate Vietnam’s air traffic could double to more than 75 million annual passengers over the next decade, putting added pressure on airlines to scale efficiently.

Depending on cabin configuration, the Boeing 737-8 can carry up to 200 passengers and fly up to 3,500 nautical miles (6,480 km), making it suitable for a wide range of intra-Asia missions.

Leadership comments: modernization and five-star ambitions

Chairman Dang Ngoc Hoa described the order as part of a broader, long-term effort that includes fleet modernization, stronger financial foundations, and talent development. He said the 737-8 investment is intended to help build a more fuel-efficient fleet, improve operating performance, and raise service standards to international benchmarks—supporting Vietnam Airlines’ stated ambition to become a five-star international airline by 2030.

Stephanie Pope said Boeing expects the 737 MAX to complement the airline’s existing widebody operations, helping Vietnam Airlines expand regional networks and strengthen connectivity across Asia.

How the 737 MAX fits alongside the 787 Dreamliner

Vietnam Airlines is already a 787 Dreamliner operator, with 17 aircraft in service on regional and long-haul routes, including services linking Vietnam with Europe. Pairing a modern single-aisle fleet with widebodies can help airlines right-size capacity across different route types while improving operating economics.

According to Boeing, the 737 MAX and 787 families deliver a 20–25% improvement in fuel use compared with the aircraft they replace, supporting growth while helping reduce operating costs.

Broader Boeing engagement in Vietnam

Boeing noted it remains active in Vietnam beyond aircraft sales, including participation in the country’s commercial aviation ecosystem through supply chain engagement, technical training, and university partnerships. The company maintains offices in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
